Nymph Sanctuary

nymph sanctuary

Right next to the pedestrian wayside, in front of the Odeon of Herodes Atticus, was the Nymph's sanctuary. Inside, many dedicative inscriptions were found, and mainly marital vases. These were probably offerings of the virgins of Athens who wanted the support of the nymph to be happy in their marriages. In a way, the nymph of dew, vegetation and marriage, Erse, was worshipped here who was an Athenian princess and a daughter of Cecrops along with Aphrodite who replaced the worship of Erse.
