Greek Islands Ancient Coins

"Nisyros Coin-Silver Drachm"

Nisyros was created from the stone snatched from Kos by Poseidon, god of the sea, which he flung a great distance to kill the giant Polybotes. The stone fell into the sea, and became Nisyros. A volcanic island with black rocks. The first inhabitants of the island seem to have excavations suggest that the ancient city, within its fortification walls, was inhabited from the 5th c. BC to the 5th c. AD; there was an earlier Bronze Age city near the harbour.

After the middle of the 4th c. BC, Nisyros struck bronze coins to serve the needs of local trade, on which is depicted the head of Poseidon with his symbols, the dolphin and trident, and that of Zeus Ammon. The influence of Rhodos on the coins is apparent from the representation of the head of Apollo and the rose.
